Belfast murder victim Mohsin Bhatti
The man killed on Botanic Avenue on Thursday after a stab attack has been named as Moshin Bhatti.
Police are also investigating the line that the attacker who killed a Pakistani man on Botanic Avenue on Thursday shouted pro-Islamic slogans during the attack.
The Mr Bhatti died at around 5am after sustaining multiple stab wounds.
A man in his 30s remains in custody and is being questioned about the attack.
He is believed to be from Somalia.
It is also thought the attacker may have been in the victim's house on India Street before the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Campbell: "The victim's nationality is still being confirmed. However, initial inquiries suggest he may be a Pakistani national.
He also said that the victim had been: "Stabbed a number of times and he died at the scene as a result of his injuries."
When asked about pro-Islamic slogans being shouted by the attacker during the attack, Mr Campbell said: "Comments made by the suspect at the scene will form part of the investigation.
"It appears there has been some sort of altercation, possibly in that flat, which has then spilled out onto the street and ended up with the murder on Botanic Avenue."
