Real IRA leader McKevitt fails in bid to get released from jail

Louth terror leader Michael McKevitt has failed in his bid to be released from prison.

McKevitt, of Beech Park, Blackrock, was the first person to be charged with directing terrorism in the Republic of Ireland.

He was sentenced to 20 years in 2003.

In a landmark civil case in 2009, McKevitt was found responsible for the 1998 Omagh bomb which killed 31 people. 

McKevitt sought for a third off his sentence under an 'enhanced remission scheme'.
