PIERCE Brosnan is bringing his boy to Belfast when he begins shooting IRA hit man movie Last Man Out later this year.

Production company ArtCastle says it's got funding to film north and south of the border on the story of a former killer haunted by the spirits of his victims. And the former Bond star announced last week that his son Sean will play the younger version of his character in their first role together.

The movie is based on Armagh man Stuart Neville's The Twelve, published four years ago, which was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic and won him critical acclaim, including praise from crime fiction king James Ellroy.

It was picked up by Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson, now a talk show host in the US, who has also co-written the script. Brosnan has signed up to play lead character Gerry Fegan, a former Provo trying to avenge the spirits who haunt him by killing the people who set them up for his bullet.

The father of three, whose younger boy Dylan is also a budding actor, says it made sense to cast his son Sean, whose mother Cassandra died of cancer, in the role.

"Last Man Out is about a man released from prison who has to deal with the venom of the past and Sean will play my character as a young man," says the actor. "So if we can make it happen I'd obviously love the chance of working with my boy.

"Sean is doing well and he's creating a career for himself. You get apprehensive regardless of what they do. It's part of being a parent. "If they choose the world of film making then I'll certainly help them in any way I can. But in the end they have to find their own way," says Brosnan.

Belfast director Terry Loane, who made Mickybo and Me and uni drama 6 Degrees has also signed on to Last Man Out, published in America as The Ghosts of Belfast. ArtCastle Production, set up by the Irish Film Board's former representative in the US Jonathan Loughran and Irish film maker Gary Shore, says the project has already attracted a lot of attention.

"We are getting a huge amount of interest due to the success of Stuart's novel and of course the casting or Pierce and his son, but we won't be announcing the latest cast auditions just yet," says a spokeswoman.

"We are budgeting for both the Republic and Northern Ireland and are being helped tremendously by both the Irish Film Board and Northern Ireland Screen for the October/ November 2013 shoot."

It can often take years to get a book from script to cinema but TV presenter Ferguson, a Glasgow native, felt so passionately about the post-Troubles tale he optioned the movie rights from his own pocket.

He clicked with Neville when the writer appeared on his chat show to promote the book in the US. Craig also struck up a friendship with Loughran when he headed up the Irish Film Board in LA.

"He helped Craig and his producer Rebecca Tucker navigate the world of indie finance and government incentives. "Craig co-wrote the script for Last Man Out and asked Jonathan to produce it when he learned Jonathan had set up ArtCastle with Gary Shore in 2012.

"Gary is making his feature debut on Universal's $85 million epic Dracula, shooting in Belfast this summer," says the ArtCastle spokeswoman.

The producer is working with William Morris Endeavour on financing and the movie will be sold through Ealing Metro, which sold Irish movie The Guard.
