Brian McIlhagga - Ballymoney murder victim

Father-of-five Brian McIlhagga has been named as the man who was shot dead in Ballymoney on Monday night.

The 42-year-old, originally from Ballymena, was attacked by an armed gang outside a house in Riverview Park at around 22.30.

He was shot in the leg and beaten and later died from his injuries.

A woman who was inside the house at the time was assaulted.

She was taken to hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

She was forced to lie on the kitchen floor as the masked gang dragged Mr McIlhagga outside before beating and shooting him.

Justice Minister David Ford said: "Whoever carried out this terrible murder in Ballymoney must be condemned without reservation.

"There is no excuse for violence, nor any cause to justify it.
"It is time those responsible realised that and accepted the will of the people that Northern Ireland should move forward in peace.

"I offer my deepest sympathies to the family at this time."

DUP MLA Mervyn Storey said: "This is not the news people in Ballymoney wanted to be wakening up to this morning.

"I understand two or three men entered a property and as a result a man has lost his life and a lady is now in hospital.

"Whatever the motive, there can be no justification for this type of activity."

He added: "It has left a family devastated and a community in shock.

"Ballymoney is a very quiet residential town and this is not the way we wanted to start 2015.

"This is something which is very sad."

Ivy Owens, who lives in the area, told the BBC: "I was lying with my daughter in bed in the back bedroom when I heard two almighty bangs, which I never thought for one minute were gunshots.

"I looked out the window to see if I could see or hear anything in my yard because it sounded so close, but I couldn't see anything.

"I am really shocked. It's such a quiet place."

Police have asked for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.
