Planning permission for the redevelopment of Casement Park has been denied.

Mr Justice Horner said the decision making process surrounding Mark H Durkan's decision to grant permission to the redevelopment was fundamentally flawed.

The new 33,000 seat GAA stadium in the heart of West Belfast would have cost £77m and had previously been given planning permission in December of last year by the SDLP MLA.

Local residents in West Belfast who objected to the scale of the news launched a legal challenge against the decision.

The judge however, identified flaws in the environmental impact assessment amongst other flaws.

He also said that the effect of increased crowds travelling to the stadium on the current road network had not properly been researched.

The decision was not quashed however.

That means the DOE, the GAA and the residents group can make submissions on changes to the current plan.

Chairman of the Casement Park Project Board, Tom Daly, said: "We are deeply disappointed by the outcome of today's decision by Mr Justice Horner.

"The proposed redevelopment of Casement Park would have provided the opportunity of a world class provincial stadium for the GAA and the broader community in the heart of Belfast.

"The project would also have provided much needed economic and social benefits to west Belfast and beyond, including financial investment, new jobs, apprenticeships and community projects.

"The new stadium would also have supported the GAA's plan to develop and grow grassroots Gaelic Games within the city and the county of Antrim. Over the coming weeks we will reflect on this decision and consider what the next steps are for Casement Park.
