A father and son from Lisnevanagh Road, Antrim, have been jailed after a judge said their case was "one of the worst" he's ever encountered.

Robert McAleenan, 55, was sentenced to nine months and his son, Conor McAleenan, 28, was sentenced to 14 months.

Both men were banned from keeping animals for 25 years.

They will serve half their sentences in custody and half on licence.

Police seized 63 animals from the pair when their farm was searched.

It was described as a "scene of horror" by officers, with dead horses and ponies lying at the feet of the living.

Some of the rescued animals were in such a bad condition they had to be put down, with Conor McAleenan saying he didn't want to treat the horses medically as he feared they couldn't be sold into the human food chain.
