Five people including a three-year-old boy have escaped a house fire in Antrim.

The blaze was reported just after 3.30am at Bleerick Drive in the Greystone estate.

The fire started in one house, but such was the intensity of the blaze, it soon spread to an adjoining house.

According to the family, thousands of pounds worth of Christmas presents were lost in the fire.

Fergal Leonard of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire spread very quickly and in total two houses and two cars were extensively damaged.

"The alarm was raised by neighbours, who alerted occupants of both houses.

"Thankfully no people have been injured in this fire and there's no doubt that this is due to the prompt action by neighbours who alerted the occupants and indeed the fire crews who brought this fire under control.

"However, this could have been a much more tragic situation."
