Mary Downey from Belfast, who survived being run over by three trains
A Belfast woman living in New York has cheated death after falling onto a Subway track in the city.
Mary Downey, 22, who lives in the Woodlawn area of the Bronx, fell onto the tracks at around 6.00am after a night out with friends.
Mary broke her shoulder when she fell onto the tracks at 49th street station on Sunday morning.
Miraculously, the broken shoulder was the only injury Mary sustained, despite being run over by three trains before being rescued.
With her shoulder injury preventing her from being able to lift herself back onto the platform, Mary was forced to roll into the trough between the railway lines, with each of the three trains passing over her.
FDNY Battalion Chief Mike Meyers: “She was lucky enough to have - it looks like to us - rolled to the platform and was in between the platform and the train when the train came into the station."
As two trains passed over Mary without noticing her by the platform, it wasn't until a third driver saw what he at first believed to be a piece of rubbish.
In fact, it was Mary's had waving for help.
Now it has emerged that Mary's rescuers, medic Niall O'Shaughnessy, from Limerick, and FDNY man Sean Cummins, from Dublin, who were first on the scene, are Irish as well.
Having spotted Cummins' Irish accent while rescuing Mary, O'Shaughnessy asked him where he was from.
Thinking O'Shaughnessy was speaking to her, Mary replied: "Belfast."
After Mary was safely removed from the tracks, both men joked: "What is this? An Irish reunion?"
She was later taken to Bellevue Hospital in the city to be treated for her broken shoulder.
A friend of Mary's, who didn't wish to be identified said: "She’s doing really well. She just fractured her shoulder."
