The PSNI have been granted an extra 48 hours to question Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams in connection with the murder of Jean McConville.

The Louth TD was arrested on Wednesday by detectives after presenting himself at Antrim police station, but today the PSNI were running out of time in regards to the amount of time they can question him without charge.

They went to court this afternoon to apply for an extension and were granted an extra 48 hours.

The PSNI are questioning Adams in connection with the 1972 IRA murder of Jean McConville.

His fellow Sinn Fein members have so far reacted with fury at Adams' arrest.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness claimed "dark forces" within the PSNI were behind the arrest.

He said: "I view his arrest as a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of the elections that are due to take place in three weeks' time, north and south on this island."

Last night Adams spent his second night in detention at the police station.

Adams has always denied any involvement in the murder of the mother of 10, who became known as one of the 'Disappeared'.

His arrest on Wednesday sent shockwaves around the world with supporters accusing the PSNI of politically motivated policing in run up to major elections.

Meanwhile, one of Jean McConville's children, Helen McKendry, said she is now prepared to name those who she believes are responsible for her mother's murder.

She said: "I spent the first 20 years of my life being afraid of these people, of fearing to speak out, but now I am no longer afraid."

"I do not fear the IRA anymore. I will happily give the names that I know to the police. What are they going to do to me? They've done so much to me already in the past 42 years, what are they going to do? Come and put a bullet in my head? Well, they know where I live."
