The UVF was back on the streets of Larne on Saturday as they marked the 100th anniversary the Clyde Valley gunship.

Members of the modern day terrorist organisation had been ordered to attend to mark a century since 25,000 guns and more than two million rounds of ammunition were landed in Northern Ireland to arm Edward Carson’s ‘army’.

UVF men had been left in no doubt they were expected to attend, anyone failing to turn up faced being fined.

Men wore period costumes and carried replica weapons. PUP chief Billy Hutchinson led proceedings as thousands took to the streets

Dressed in period costume, top hat and tails, he was joined by party colleague Ken Wilkinson and thousands of loyalists as they marked the anniversary of the arrival of gun ship Clyde Valley in the port of Larne.

East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson was also in attendance, but unlike other participants he opted for modern dress.

In 1914 loyalists imported guns and ammunition from Germany into the Co. Antrim port to prepare to resist Home Rule for Ireland.

The main parade, organised by Larne District LOL No 1, marched through the town centre, to a memorial on Bay Road where a short service was held and poppy wreaths were laid.

Harry Carter, Larne District Master told UTV: “It’s very important that we remember what has happened in those days, but we are also very conscious that we have to move forward as a peaceful province and what everybody wants is peace.

“But it’s only right that we should commemorate this event of one hundred years ago.”
